Space Theme Parties
The theme that worked well for our five year old was “Space Invaders”. We printed invitations for the kids with “Martian Affair”, complete with a cute little alien on the front, and let the parents know we would be having an out of the world experience.
When the kids enter the house, we had decorated it as if we were in space. Asteroids were on the ceiling, designed from balled up newspaper painted grey/silver. Stars were suspended from the ceiling (Christmas ornaments), and the lights were low. Butcher paper was on the wall, awaiting the activity time so the kids could decorate.
Complete with paints, this was the waiting activity as the kids decorated for the party themselves. Planets, starts, the sun… the room came alive with the space theme, compliments of the kids. This really cuts back on decorating time, while giving the kids a great activity and creative outlet.
Once we had our space theme on the wall, we needed to make ourselves into aliens. Headbands from the dollar store, aluminum foil and some glue on fuzzy balls gave this group of five year olds all the thrill they needed.
Game time included playing pin the antennae on the alien, much like pin the tail on the donkey. The real hit, though, was fueling the space ship. The kids got messy as they filled cups with green jello as fuel for the next space flight.
Our cake was the shape of the space shuttle, which had come to invade space. It was simple with a three layer cake that progressively got smaller, with little windows. We served the cake on “spaceship plates” (paper plates that we pretended were space ships). Here is a picture of a spaceship cake that is easy to make and looks really cool. You could also make a rocket ship cake.
Our last activity was the piñata. We designed a spaceship piñata just for the event. Stuffed inside were not only candy, but miniature toys, light sticks (to resemble stars or lasers) and spaceships for the kids to take home.
This will be a party that is sure to be out of this world! Your child and friends will have a blast. Once they leave the “mother ship” you can be sure they will be talking about this party for weeks.
